NVIS Helicopter Training

Advanced Night Operations. Absolute Precision.

Where visibility is reduced, and performance becomes instinct.

Nighthawks Aviation delivers NVIS helicopter training in Australia, preparing pilots to operate with confidence, control, and clarity in low-light and no-light environments using Night Vision Goggles (NVG).

Overview of NVIS Helicopter Training

NVIS (Night Vision Imaging System) training extends a pilot’s capability into one of the most demanding environments in aviation — aided night operations.

Our programs are designed to develop precision, situational awareness, and composure where visual cues are limited and decision-making is critical.

We provide training for:

  • Initial issue NVIS ratings

  • Additional NVIS endorsements and capability upgrades

Available endorsements include:

  • G1 NVIS Endorsement — operations under IFR and VFR

  • G2 NVIS Endorsement — operations under VFR

Training integrates advanced instruction with realistic operational scenarios, preparing pilots for conditions where accuracy and discipline are essential.

All NVIS training is delivered in alignment with CASA regulatory standards, ensuring both compliance and operational readiness.

Who NVIS Training Is For

NVIS training is designed for pilots operating — or preparing to operate — in advanced night environments.

Including:

  • Pilots conducting NVG operations under VFR or IFR

  • Aviation professionals in:

    • Emergency services

    • Law enforcement

    • Offshore and marine operations

    • Aerial firefighting

  • Pilots seeking to add an NVIS endorsement to their qualifications

Training Outcomes

Pilots undertaking NVIS training with Nighthawks Aviation develop both technical precision and operational awareness, including:

  • In-depth understanding of NVG systems and limitations

  • Pre-flight planning, equipment checks, and operational briefings

  • NVIS-specific flight procedures and handling techniques

  • Management of abnormal and emergency scenarios in low-light conditions

  • Non-technical skills including situational awareness, workload management, and decision-making

  • Structured debriefing, performance review, and documentation discipline

This is training designed for real-world application, where composure and control define performance.

Entry Requirements

Grade 1 (G1) NVIS Rating

To apply, you must have:

  • A valid Instrument Rating (IFR)

  • Minimum 250 hours helicopter flight time

  • At least 20 hours instrument time, including 5 hours dual

Grade 2 (G2) NVIS Rating

To apply, you must have:

  • A Night VFR Rating

  • Minimum 250 hours helicopter flight time

  • At least 20 hours night aeronautical experience

  • At least 20 hours instrument time, including 5 hours dual*

All NVIS courses include a minimum of 5 hours dual flight using NVG, meeting CASA requirements for NVIS rating and endorsement flight testing.

*Additional instrument time can be provided by Nighthawks Aviation if required.
